Ronnie Alcano wins the Final stop in Manila
Filipino Ronnie Alcano, playing in his first finals appearance, outclassed Busan Asian Games gold medalist Yang Ching Shun of Taiwan, 11-6, and won the final leg of the San Miguel Beer Asian 9-Ball Tour at the Robinson’s Galleria Trade Hall late last night.
Alcano took advantage of two scratched shots of Yang to break away from a 6-all deadlock to win the top purse of $10,000 in the tournament whose main draw included the 32 top Asian players from 11 countries.
Earlier, Alcano, who had gone only as far as the quarterfinals in the tour, trounced another Taiwanese, Chang Pei-wei, 9-6, in the quarterfinals, then upended compatriot Antonio Lining in the semifinals to advance to the championship match held after a 10-minute break.
On Friday, Yang played the spoiler’s role as he edged Filipino legend Efren 'Bata' Reyes, 9-8, to avert an all-Filipino cast in the semis.
Despite the loss, Yang, who topped the third leg in Kaoshiung last month, assured himself of the overall tour title after pooling 200 points by making it to the semifinal round in all four legs of the series.
The top 10 players on the tour will directly qualify for the World Pool Championships.
Gandy Valle won the first leg in Singapore, while Reyes topped the Jakarta stop. Yang won in his hometown of Kaoshiung last month.
It looked like it was anybody’s game as the game tied at 6-all. Alcano surged ahead, 7-6, on his break and made it 8-6 when Yang scratched his shot on the break. Alcano made good a 1-9 combination on that miscue.
Alcano took a 9-6 lead on his break, and on the 16th rack, Yang again made a scratch, giving Alcano the chance to sink all six balls left for a 10-6 edge.
He then finished off the game with a good break on the last rack.
Yang dished out a superb game in disposing of Valle in the semifinals, coming up with a spectacular jump shot and carom on the 14th rack to draw level before racking up the next four frames for an 11-7 victory that set him up against Alcano for the title showdown.
The San Miguel Asian 9-ball Tour is sanctioned by the Asian Pocket Blliard Union and organized by ESPN STAR Sports Event Management Group and Puyat Sports. San Miguel Beer is the title sponsor.
Now on its third year, the tour offers a total prize money of $50,000 for the Manila leg.
