Efren Reyes has won the 2014 Manny Pacquiao International 10-Ball Billiards Championship held in General Santos City in the Philippines.
The tournament; being held for only the second time was bank rolled by Philippine boxing star Manny Pacquiao who put up a total pot of $150,000 with $13,000 going to the ‘Magician’ Efren Reyes who defeated fell country-man Demosthenes Pulpul 11-10 in the final.
Reyes at the age of 60 came out on top of the field of 128 of the best players in the world that included former world Champions Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen and Alex Pagulayan that unfolded over a full week.
The lesser known Pulpul benefitted from technical fouls enroute to the final when playing Carlo Biado who failed to call the pocket when sinking the winning 10-ball in the semi-final to which Pulpul protested. The error cost Biado his place in final as Pulpul went on to win the semi-final over Biado and a shot at the title and a guaranteed $7,000 for at least being runner-up.
Pulpul got off to the better start in the final to go 2-0 up but Reyes was soon on terms and was 5-2 up before an 8-10 combination put him 6-2 up.
The match would end up tied at 10-10 before the crowd favourite triumphed in the decider.
Reyes will team up with close friend Francisco Bustamante in the $100,000 doubles tournament starting the following day with pool fan Pacquiao teaming up Warren Kiamco.
