Liang Wenbo beat Judd Trump 9-6 in the final of the inaugural Coral English Open held at the Eventcity in Manchester.
Wenbo, who has made two ranking finals in the past, always looked in control after sharing the opening session, taking the first two frames with breaks of 95 in each before Trump levelled the match.
Wenbo, took the first 3 frames of the second session including the 7th on the black ball to move in to a commanding 5-2 lead.
Trump claimed the next two frames that included a break of 132; the highest of the match to get within one frame of Wenbo. Wembo reinstated his three frame lead by taking the next two frames 84-0 and 115-0.
At 7-4 down Trump required 5 of the next 6 frames to pull off back-to-back tournament wins and he came close after taking the next two. Trailing 7-6, Wenbo, unperturbed took the next with a great clearance of 62 before sealing victory in a nervy final frame 75-51.
I'm very happy, in the last two frames I concentrated on every shot and made two good breaks. Snooker is a very difficult game but if you don't enjoy it you don't play well. Judd put me under pressure but to go 8-6 ahead gave me more confidence.
I have to say thank you to Ronnie O'Sullivan because I practice with him and eat with him every day. I have learned a lot from him over the past two years and he's my best friend. Yesterday he told me to look back at my UK Championship final last year and see what I could learn from it. I knew I needed to be more calm and controlled this time.
I'm going to forget about this victory now and keep going in the next one. I always learn from every experience.
Wenbo collected a winners cheque for £70,000 and is the only player in with a chance of the winning the grand slam £1 million bonus should he win the other three events. Trump collected £30,000 as the runner-up.17 Oct 2016
